Status

Cicindela tranquebarica is a generalist species which ranges very widely across much of North America, and has a number of named subspecies over various portions of its range. In Maryland, the nominate form occurs, which is blackish above, with whitish maculations. This species can be found in a large range of sparsely-vegetated, open or semi-open habitats, including, but not limited to old sandpits, trails, abandoned quarries, sandy roads, pine barrens, powerlines, river banks, and many others (Knisley & Schultz, 1997)(B. Coulter, pers. obs.). This adaptable species will often persist at sandy sites after other tiger beetles species with narrower habitat requirements (e.g. C. formosa, C. scutellaris) have been locally extirpated by habitat succession.
