Status

Most frequently encountered member of its genus. Fairly common in some parts of Maryland, especially in the fall, when it can be found visiting flowers in coastal meadows and hedges. Flies mostly July through October. May be migratory (Skevington, 2019). Larvae are aquatic filter feeders.

Description

Large and robust, measuring 10-13.5 mm (Skevington, 2019). Distinctive and attractive. Identifiable from photos. Note series of 3 to 4 black and gray cross-bands on the scutum.
