Description
Cystodinium cornifax is a solitary, sessile freshwater dinoflagellate. Although it has a flagellate life stage, it is most often encountered - and most easily identified - as a sessile organism. This species can be distinguished from other sessile dinoflagellates by the apical horns (usually one at each end of the long axis).
Where To Find
Cystodinium cornifax can be found in freshwater habitats throughout Maryland. It is most often found growing among plants and other algae in shallow water.
