White Pine Blister Rust is regulated invasive species in Maryland (MISC 2022).
Description
White Pine Blister Rust is a microscopic, pathogenic rust fungus that infects 5-needle pines (notably the wild Pinus strobus) and gooseberries (Ribes spp.). The fungus causes white blisters on pines and may kill some trees, particularly seedlings. The same fungus also causes leaf spots on gooseberries (Ribes spp.). The fungus must infect both hosts, in series, to complete its life cycle.
