The genus Solanum in Maryland includes some native and some non-native species. The native species Carolina Horsenettle (Solanum carolinensis) and Eastern Black Nightshade (Solanum emulans) are widespread and common in agricultural and suburban habitats. The genus also includes the widely-cultivated Potato and Tomato, both of which may escape from cultivation under the right conditions.
Description
To identify the species of Solanum likely to be encountered in Maryland, it is important to note the presence of spines; the presence of glandular hairs on the leaves; floral characteristics such as inflorescence type, size and shape of the anthers; and fruit characteristics.
