Status
The Spring Salamander (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus) is a fairly large, heavy-bodied salamander of small streams and seeps, often spring-fed. In Maryland, it is restricted to the Piedmont west into the mountains. The gilled larvae are fully aquatic, while the active adults are often found away from water, especially after rain. The breeding season ranges from late autumn into winter (Conant & Collins 1998; Maryland DNR site; Bishop, 1943).
Description
Spring Salamanders have a conspicuous pale ridge (the canthus rostralis) laterally from the eye to the front of the snout.
