Status

The widely reported species Lycogala epidendrum is now thought to represent several unrecognized species. See notes on the Lycogala sp. page.

It is not yet clear which species occur in Maryland. Historic reports of Wolf's Milk should be reviewed carefully.

Description

Fruiting body: Shades of red, pink, or orange when young to brown and black in age; round or nearly so. Spores: Orange liquid when young, then various shades of pink and gray as the liquid solidifies, ending with a fine purple-brown or pink powder. (J. Solem, pers. comm.)
