Chris Frye states, "Problems with type specimens and varying species circumscriptions over the last century have resulted in a situation where Galactia volubilis has long been confused with Galactia regularis, and at least in Maryland, Galactia regularis also with Galactia brachypoda, the latter of which has only recently been recognized as a part of the Maryland Flora. Additional herbarium work is needed to apply the clarified taxonomy presented by Nesom (2015) to Maryland plants. Additionally, Duncan (1979) provides a valuable discussion of these taxa."
