Status
This species was recently separated from Sericocarpus asteroides which is also present in Maryland (Nesom (2021) Phytoneuron 2021-33). Historic records of the two species were treated as Sericocarpus asteroides.
Description
Sericocarpus asteroides is strictly caespitose and lacks the scale-leaved rhizomes found in Sericocarpus asteroides.
Where To Find
Although there is likely to be some overlap, Sericocarpus asteroides is expected to be found on the Coastal Plain while Sericocarpus caespitosus is expected on the Appalachian Plateau (Nesom 2021). The actual distribution in Maryland remains uncertain.
