Field corn, sweet corn and popcorn are all derived from the same species. Sweet corn and popcorn are both favorite plants for home gardens. Field corn is among the most economically important row crops grown in Maryland. Maryland farmers harvested 480,000 acres of corn in 2023 (according the USDA), most of it for grain. Corn is used for several food products, it is fed to livestock and is included in many bird-seed mixes.
Corn is an annual crop and rarely escapes cultivation (Terrell & Peterson, 2009). However, under the right conditions, populations may persist for multiple years. You are most likely to encounter volunteer corn plants at the edge of fields and gardens, in ditches along the road and under bird feeders.
