Common in sand hill habitats that border the Pocomoke River and Nassawango Creek regions of Worcester and Wicomico Counties. Uncommon in sandy interior habitats of Anne Arundel and Prince George's County (Patuxent Research Refuge).

Taxonomically in limbo. The Pityopsis graminifolia complex has been split into several different species by various authors. While the official Maryland State Vascular Plant List (Knapp, Naczi) lists Pityopsis graminifolia var. graminifolia as the only species present in the state, the Weakley Flora of the Southeastern United States (A. Weakley, 2020) lists two species as occurring: Pityopsis aspera var. adenolepis and Pityopsis nervosa. Further research is needed.

Very easy to differentiate from other yellow asters by the distinctive foliage. The foliage resembles grass, but with a silvery sheen that is caused by dense hairs that grows on the leaves and stem.

Narrow-leaved Silkgrass is an important plant for many rare pollen specialist bees that fly in the late season (August-October).
