Status

Historically, Sericocarpus asteroides was a wide-spread and structurally heterogeneous species. However, Nesom (2021. Phytoneuron 2021-33) recognized a second species Sericocarpus caespitosus. If this is accepted, Sericocarpus asteroides has a much narrower distribution in the eastern United States. Historic records of the two species were treated as Sericocarpus asteroides.

Description

Sericocarpus asteroides produces slender rhizomes that spread laterally from a caudex. New plants arise at the tip of the rhizomes. Sericocarpus caespitosus does not produce rhizomes.

Where To Find

Although there is likely to be some overlap, Sericocarpus asteroides is expected on the Coastal Plain while Sericocarpus caespitosus is expected on the Appalachian Plateau (Nesom 2021). The actual distribution in Maryland remains uncertain.
