Treetop Emerald (Somatochlora provocans) is the most widespread species of a small group of related southern Somatochlora, and the only one occurring in the Mid-Atlantic region. This species is often found foraging high up, frequently at treetop level, inspiring the common name. It breeds in small, sandy forest streams (Paulson, 2011). This coastal plain species is rare in Maryland, with records from five counties, including one on the eastern shore (Richard Orr's The Dragonflies and Damselflies of Maryland and the District of Columbia). It is considered state endangered in Maryland (S1).
